LUDHIANA: Even as the elections in the state are less than twenty days away, Saleem Tabri police on Wednesday evening took into custody four persons after it recovered twelve hundred and seventy liquor boxes from four vehicles at Jalandhar bypass.
The detained drivers were identified as Gurpreet Singh of Sehbazbpura in Raikot, Shamsher Singh of Hanumangarh in Rajasthan, Darshan Lal of Kochar market area and Jujhar Singh of Amloh in Fatehgarh sahib district.

Police officials said that Saleem Tabri police team led by Station House Officer (SHO) Muhammad Jameel had set up a police check post on the directions of election Commission to check liquor and drug smuggling at Jalandhar byepass on Wednesday evening. They added that during checking, cops stopped three Mahindra Pick Up and one Tata 407 vehicles coming from Jalandhar side and during checking found 1271 boxes of country made liquor in them.
Cops said that the accused persons were asked to present a valid document for the same but they failed to do so. They added that later they were taken into custody and vehicles were seized.
SHO Muhammad Jameel said that excise team was also called on the spot and matter is being investigated. He added that the drivers had to supply two vehicle loads in Khanna and two in Ludhiana.
Police sources said that the liquor might have for coming elections.
