A program of works aimed at expending an additional $1m provided by the NSW Government to repair moisture damaged roads was endorsed by Administrator Wendy Tuckerman at the December Council Meeting. The NSW State Government provided funds to assist with the repair of damaged road infrastructure but not directly attributable to the declared natural disasters of July 20 and August 30 2016. Council’s engineering staff identified a significant unfunded pavement repair program on the Regional Road network caused by saturation and heavy vehicle traffic. The Council report recommended funding for priority repairs on Cunningar Rd, Riverside Dr, Henry Lawson Way, Murringo Rd, Milvale Rd, Rugby Rd and Frogmore Rd.

“Maintenance of the Regional Road network is usually funded from the Regional Road Block Grant provided by the NSW State Government,” said Council’s General Manager, Anthony McMahon, “On a good year, the level of funding assistance provided to Council is not adequate for the continuing increases in Regional road freight traffic; however on an uncharacteristically wet year such as the one we have just experienced, the funding falls significantly short of maintenance requirements.”
“Our Regional Roads carry freight and general traffic between the regional centres and generally have the highest traffic volumes,” said Mr McMahon. “Without the additional $1M in funding, the repair of pavement damage on the Regional road network would have required the reallocation of existing maintenance and capital budgets from other planned projects.”
Work has already commenced on the identified roads and repair schedule updates will be available on the Hilltops Council website.
