‘Sasi well placed to uphold Jaya’s legacy’

CHENNAI: Commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister and late actor MG Ramachandran, the Tamil film fraternity conducted an event that was inaugurated by AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala at Abirami Cinemas on Tuesday evening. Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and other politicians, including KA Sengottaiyan, were present.

Speaking on the occasion, filmmaker Bharathiraja recalled his association with MGR, saying as an actor, he was nonpareil. “More than a versatile artiste, he was a great human being. After 30 years, we still talk about his philanthropy, such was his magnanimity. He’s the only leader who’s respected by an opposition party even now,” he added.

Heaping praise on Sasikala, he said she’s the ideal person to carry forward Jayalalithaa’s legacy. “Chinnamma was almost like Amma’s shadow, her constant companion and only friend. Maybe, things are destined this way. I am sure she’d guide the supporters and party workers in a proper way,” he said.
Film personalities, including K S Ravikumar, Karthi, Lingusamy, P Vasu, Kalaipuli S Thanu, Nasser, Vishal, and Prabhu spoke about MGR.

Producer RK Selvamani said, “we’re planning to screen more than 130 films of MGR across different theatres.” The celebrations also saw the screening of MGR’s classic Ayirathil Oruvan at the venue.
