Qatar Petroleum (QP) held the “Qatar Petroleum High Performance Boards Award” ceremony on Monday, marking the conclusion of a specialised nine-month programme for Qatari board directors.
The programme, held in partnership with IMD, was a transformational journey for more than 100 of QP and other major Qatari companies designed to lay the foundations for an enhanced corporate governance of the future.
The Qatar Petroleum High Performance Boards Programme, guided the participating board directors through an extensive course of five modules covering governance, board effectiveness, ethics, finance and risk, strategy and leadership, all tailored to the role and responsibilities of board members.
QP president and CEO Saad Sherida al-Kaabi reflected on the programme’s achievements and the way forward, and “thanked all participants at the great results” they have achieved.
At the awards ceremony, al-Kaabi said, “high performing boards have a strong strategic orientation. It is a culture of regularly performance assessment, accountability, and healthy attention to recruitment and development of directors. Therefore, it is important that a clearly defined role and a well-focused approach are adopted in order to ensure high performance.
He stressed the need for different approaches to governance and decision making, and said “the QP High Performance Board programme has laid the foundations. It is now up to you how to build on these foundations, and create your own success stories.”
Al-Kaabi thanked IMD and professor Didier Cossin, director of the IMD Global Board Center for delivering a state of the art executive education programme, and for their impressive efforts in the success of this learning journey.
Participation in the programme was meant for board members of QP companies, but was extended to board members and directors of Qatar’s oil and gas industry as well as other strategic entities within Qatar such as the Ministry of Finance, Qatar Foundation, Qatar Investment Authority, Qatar National Bank, and the Pension Authority.
During the ceremony, a number of participants receiving their diploma were given the opportunity to express what they appreciated about the programme and how much impact it would have on their board work in the future.
