Hawkers on both sides of the road at Jashuva Nagar, Kancharapalem get busy striking a deal with customers who queue up to stuff their bags with chunks of meat, vegetables and groceries. The trucks carrying the livestock line up on the main road to get unloaded, leaving little space for road-users. The storm water drain is in a state of disrepair.

Those living in the area have to put up with foul odour emanating from the drain that passes through the main road of the colony and also from badly maintained butcher shops dotting all along the lanes. Adding to the existing inconvenience, the leftover pieces of offal and poultry are strewn on the roads.

“For years, we have been living in unhygienic and unhealthy conditions. The clogged drain plus meat shops turned the neighbourhood a breeding ground for mosquitoes. As sanitation workers visit once in a while, nobody considers clearing piled up trash,” N. Venkata Ramana, resident of Jashuva Nagar, said.

Residents said though they have been representing the perennial issues to GVMC authorities, nothing has been done to address them. “Street corners have become open toilets for children studying at Aganwadi centre in the area. We do not have a toilet facility on the premises attached to a community hall. This apart, the centre is desperately in need of an ayah to take care of 25 children,’ J. Devudamma, Aganwadi teacher who visits the sulabh complex located at Kancharapalem market to relieve herself, said.

A concerted effort was required to develop the colony with basic amenities, the residents said.
