Belagavi: A pregnant Indian bison (Indian Gaur) was mowed down by a speeding vehicle near Savargali village of Khanapur taluk in the wee hours of Monday.
The night patrolling squad of the forest department found the bison by the roadside. Forest department authorities suspect the truck might have hit the bison when it was crossing the road to drink water. Veterinarians said the bison’s spinal cord was injured.

Speaking to TOI, DCF B V Patil said that despite signboards along the way to drive slow as animals can be spotted, drivers tend to speed. Instances of wild gaurs straying into the villages of Shivamogga, Mysuru, Chamarajanagarare and Belagavi have been on the rise in the past six months. The department is taking all precautionary measures to avert such accidents.
