KOLKATA: The
Red Horns Division of the
Army and Assam Police, based on specific inputs from Military Intelligence, apprehended three linkmen of the banned Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) on Monday night. Seven rifles were seized from them.
“A late nigh operation was launched on Monday in the area of Nayekgaon in
Kokrajhar district. During the operation, three persons were found moving suspiciously and apprehended.
They have been identified as Zehral Islam (36), Joved Ali (36) and Ajit Ali (30). All are residents of the Bongaigaon district,” said Lt Col Suneet Newton, PRO, Ministry of Defence, Guwahati.
During interrogation, the three confessed that they are MULTA linkmen and gun-runners. They led security personnel to the location where the rifles were hidden. The men were also involved in extortion and arms dealing on the group’s behalf.
“The apprehensions and recovery of seven rifles shall further restrict the operating space available to terrorist outfits and would strengthen the moral ascendency maintained by security forces. It would facilitate efforts towards curbing extortion and illegal weapons dealing in the area. The operation shall provide a sense of security to the populace,” Newton added.
