Karolina Pliskova claims 7th WTA title in Brisbane

Karolina Pliskova of Czechoslovakia downed Alize Cornet of France, 6-0 6-3, on Saturday to capture the Brisbane International title on Saturday, claiming her seventh international title at Brisbane, Australia.

Pliskova, who will rise to a career-high No. 5 in the world rankings this week, dropped only one set all week and hit 30 winners in the final, compared to 10 by Cornet.

"It's nice to join the other names on this trophy," Pliskova said after claiming the Evonne Goolagong Cawley trophy. "Every day here it's been a full stadium and I've loved to play in front of youand I hope I'm going to be back next year."

Cornet, who won her only previous meeting Pliskova in 2013, was never in the match, and it was virtually over after the Czech claimed the first set in only 18 minutes. Pliskova coasted through the second set without facing a break opportunity.

--Lauren Davis of the United States turned back eighth-seeded Ana Konjuh of Croatia, 6-3, 6-1, to win the ASB Classic in Aukland, New Zealand, claiming the first WTA title of her six-year-career.

The unseeded Davis, 23, knocked off her fourth seeded opponent of the tournament.

"It's definitely an incredible feeling winning my first WTA title," Davis said. "It's definitely surreal.

"I've been waiting for this one for quite a few years. I had two finals last year and it was definitely discouraging and frustrating but third time's a charm."

Davis defeated fifth-seeded Kiki Bertens, fourth-seeded Barbora Strycova and seventh-seeded Jelena Ostapenko on her way to the final.

--Katerina Siniakova of Czechoslovakia claimed her first WTA title by defeating American Alison Riske, 6-3, 6-4 in the Shenzhen Open in Shenzhen, China.

The 20-year-old Siniakova, ranked 52nd in the world, upset top-10 players Simona Halep and Johanna Konta on her way to the final, where she overcame an early break by winning four straight games en route to winning the first set.

After losing WTA finals WTA finals in Bastad and Tokyo last year, Siniakova finished this one off with two breaks in the second set on her way to disposing of Riske in 78 minutes.

"It's been a really great week for me and I'm so glad that I won this time because this match was really tough," Siniakova said. "I didn't play my best, but I'm really happy that I did it."

Riske has lost four finals since her last victory in 2014.
