Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM Saharanpur candidate booked for violating code of conduct

An FIR under section 171H of IPC (illegal payments in connection with an election) has been lodged.

Saharanpur, Jan 17: Election Commission has booked All-India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi for violating code of conduct in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and an FIR was lodged against him. The commission also booked AIMIM candidate Talat Khan was also booked in the same case.

In a complaint filed by SI Anil Kumar, All-India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Asaduddin Owaisi were alleged to have pasted their posters on religious places, private property and a property related with power corporation, Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjay Singh said.

Police has registered a case under section 171H of IPC (illegal payments in connection with an election).

All-India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has fielded two candidates in Saharanpur district. While Junaid Ayubi will contest from Behat assembly seat, Talat Khan has been fielded from Saharanpur. AIMIM has also fielded Haji Shahabuddin, Haji Aslam Ansari and Israr Hussain from Moradabad City, Moradabad Dehat (rural) and Kundarki seat in Saharanpur district. Yaseen Ansari from Bareilly City, and Shamim Ahmed Turk in Amroha city will be official nominee of AIMIM.

Asaduddin Owaisi led party failed to open its account in Bihar Assembly elections. However, the party has a sizable support among minorities in Uttar Pradesh. The party decided to field its candidates in phase I elections of Uttar Pradesh which includes districts in western Uttar Pradesh.

The notification for phase one of the elections was issued on Tuesday. Uttar Pradesh will have seven-phase polling this time too. In the first phase of polling on February 11, 73 assembly seats will go to poll. The last date for filing the nomination for first phase of polls is January 24 and will be taken up for scrutiny on January 25. The nominations can be withdrawn till January 27. The counting and results will be out on March 11.
