New Delhi, Jan 17: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has released the list of candidates for 112 seats in Punjab. The party had entered into an alliance with Lok Insaf Party, led by Bains brothers of Ludhiana. Lok Insaf Party had been allotted the remaining 5 seats to contest.

Although AAP emerged as the first among competing political parties to declare its list of candidates, the party had to face severe infighting and rebellion. The widespread dissidence is one of the reasons why a section of AAP volunteers and supporters turned disillusioned with the party. In almost all the seats, the rebel AAP factions have fielded their candidates. Most of the dissidents have switched to Apna Punjab Party led by expelled AAP Punjab convenor Sucha Singh Chhotepur.

Among the major candidates which AAP has fielded include Bhagwant Mann, the MP from Sangrur, who is now challenging deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal from Jalalabad, Fazilka constituency. AAP has also fielded veteran Supreme Court lawyer H S Phoolka from Dakha constituency in Ludhiana district. Phoolka is a known campaigner for the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Among other major candidates being fielded by AAP include: Sarabjit Kaur, wife of former Akali minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh, from Dera Bassi; and Himmat Singh Shergil from SAS Nagar in Mohali district.

Pollsters claim that AAP has maintained its stronghold in Malwa region of Punjab. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, AAP bagged the 4 seats from Malwa region. However, two out of the four MPs have turned rebels and were expelled from the party. Dr Dharamvira Gandhi, who was expelled in July 2015, has now formed a new political outfit Punjab Front.

Opinion poll after opinion polls have painted a concerning electoral scenario for AAP. The HuffPost CVoter survey in March 2016 had predicted a victory for AAP in 94-100 out of the 117 seats contested. Successive surveys thereafter have shown a dip in the popularity wave of AAP in Punjab. The ABP News Nielsen survey released in January 4, claims that AAP would win merely 12-18 seats.

Elections in Punjab are scheduled on February 4. All the 117 seats would be contested in a single phase. The results would be declared on March 11.
