A teenager who drove up to 100mph while carrying passengers and being chased by police has been sentenced.

Nuno Tomas, 19, of Whitehill Road, Carrutherstown had four passengers in his car as he drove more than 70mph in a Carlisle residential area.

Tomas admitted dangerous driving at Carlisle Crown Court and was given an eight-month jail sentence, suspended for two years and banned from driving.

An accident could have been "a fatal one", Judge Barbara Forrester told him.

He had committed a speeding offence in Scotland earlier that evening on 9 October and eventually had the car keys confiscated by his mother, the court heard.

Tomas must complete a rehabilitation requirement, unpaid work and take an extended driving test after his 12-month driving ban.
