RUDRAPUR: Sunil Rastogi, the serial offender arrested by police from East Delhi’s Ashok Nagar for attempting to sexually abuse two minor girls, used to live in a slum in Rudrapur town of Uttarakhand until a few months ago. In February last year, he was jailed for three months for sexually assaulting a girl here while she was working at a farm. But he went missing after he got bail.
Udham Singh Nagar SSP Senthil Abudeyi said a case had been registered against Rastogi for abduction and molestation of the 10-year-old.
Rastogi had got bail in May and had stopped coming for court appearances in September. His family abandoned the house they lived in and have been missing since.
“He was a low profile guy who changed jobs regularly. Sometimes he would work as a tailor and sometimes as a labourer. He did not have any permanent residence in the city. He spent the life of a nomad and shifted to Bilaspur city of Rampur district in UP soon after he was booked in Rudrapur,” the SSP told TOI.
“We are in contact with the Delhi Police and we are now seeking a warrant to port Rastogi from Delhi to Rudrapur, as we need to present him in court in the case lodged against him here,” Abudeyi added.
According to police, the Transit Camp police station in Rudrapur received a complaint from a man on February 10, 2016 that Rastogi had sexually assaulted the latter's 10-year-old daughter while she was working at a farm. The paedophile was arrested and jailed for three months. Granted bail by a court, Rastogi was released from jail in May 2016. His family was soon forced to leave the area by neighbours.
Transit Camp police station in-charge Sushil Kumar said, “Earlier Rastogi used to live in
Transit Camp of Rudrapur but without any permanent address. When he was not found there, we got information that he was living in Bilaspur, in Rampur district, along with his family. When he stopped appearing in court, we conducted a search in Bilaspur, too, but found that his family had left the area without a trace,” Kumar said.
Rastogi's neighbours in Transit Camp were not surprised at the revelation that he had told cops that he sexually abused over 500 young girls. “He committed several such offences in our area which went unreported,” said Uttam Dutta, who had helped cops track him down in 2016. Another neighbour, Vikas Malik, said, “He was always hunting for young girls and changing jobs.”
Dilip Adhikari, former member of municipal corporation from the area, said he remembered Rastogi for immensely lacking self-worth and self-confidence. “Such people are usually guided by their perverse impulses,” he said.
Abudeyi said he has made three police teams to track down Rastogi’s family and “the police will make sure that the culprit finally meets his fate behind bars”.
