We know that Deadpool is getting some new buddies in the form of Cable and Domino - no news yet on casting - but now we've learned that three more characters from the first movie will return for the sequel.

Joining Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool (obviously) are his sidekicks, stroppy Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Russian metal man Colossus (Stefan Kapicic).

During an interview with Collider, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that both the mutants would be returning in some capacity or other.

Reese confirmed: "Yeah, they'll be in the sequel," while Wernick added: "They'll make at least an appearance."

Which implies that they might only have small roles. Will they be killed off? You never know with Deadpool.

Also back for the sequel is cab driver Dopinder (Karan Soni) - Wernick told Nerdist in a Facebook live video: "I would say that the relationship between Dopinder and Deadpool was the most fun for me. I love that relationship and I love that character. And he'll be in the sequel."

The original's director Tim Miller has left the project but John Wick's David Leitch has joined in his place.

Morena Baccarin, who plays Wade Wilson's love interest Vanessa, has teased a possible return, while TJ Miller, who plays his best friend Weasel, also "believes" he should be returning for the sequel.

While Deadpool mooted Keira Knightley as a great choice for Cable in the post-credits sequence of the first film, apparently Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Carol) is the name that has been doing the rounds in connection with the role of the time-travelling mutant commando (read more about his crazy backstory here).

The same rumour added that Domino – another mercenary mutant type with a long association with both Deadpool and Cable – is being planned to make her on-screen debut in the movie. The Martian's Mackenzie Davis is apparently being eyed for the role.

Reese and Wernick have said that this doesn't mean Deadpool 2 is secretly turning into an ensemble film. Wade is still a solo hero for now.
