WONDERFUL PIECE OFHOLLYWOOD MASTERPIECE.AS AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENT IWAS CONFLICTED WATCHING IT.WHAT IMPACT DID THE FILM HAVE ONSOCIETY WHEN IT WAS RELEASED ANDWHAT LINGERING IMPACT AS IT HADOVER THE YEARS?MICHAEL:THE RELEASE PLAYED INTOTHE BIGOTRY OF THE TIME.PART OF WHAT THENAACP, THEBOSTON NAACP, TROTTER WAS TRYINGTO DO AT THAT TIME, WAS FIGHTFOR EQUAL RIGHTS FOR RACIALJUSTICE IN THE BACK.AS TROTTER TALKED ABOUT IN THOSETIMES, THIS WAS A BIGOTEDFILM.IT WAS HIS RESPONSIBILITY TOSTAND AGAINST.UNFORTUNATELY WE SORT OF SEETHAT PLAY OUT TODAY.WE BRING THAT FORWARD.WHEN YOU HAVE IMAGES IN FILM ANDBOOKS THAT PORTRAY BIGOTRYPERPETUATE BIGOTRY, IT IS OURJOB TO FIGHT BACK.KAREN: FILM IS VERY POWERFUL.IMAGES THAT APPEAR IN MOVIES.VERY POWERFUL.AND HAVE A SUBCONSCIOUS EFFECTON PEOPLE.MALAIKA: ABSOLUTELY.ONE OF THE IMAGES IS THE IMAGEOF THE KKK BURNING THE CROSS.THAT HAS BEEN MENTIONED IN THEBOOK IS BASED ON, THOMAS DIXON'STHE KLANSMEN.THAT WAS NOT SOMETHING THE KUKLUX KLAN HAVE EVEN DONE.IT WAS NOT A PART OF THEM.FOLLOWING THE FILM THAT ISSOMETHING -- ONE OF THE MOSTIMMEDIATE VISUAL IMPACTS.THE KKK SUDDENLY BURNINGCROSSES.THINGS THAT ARE SEEN IN FILM ANDTHIS MEDIU THAT Practically every film student (our own Karen Holmes Ward included) is tasked to sit through D.W. Griffiths’ 1915 epic ‘The Birth of a Nation.’ The powerful yet virulently racist film was lauded by the press and was the first film screened in the White House. During its release, a largely overlooked battle was being waged right in Boston by a man named William Monroe Trotter. His fight is being chronicled in the documentary ‘Birth of a Movement’ which can be seen on PBS on February 6.
