American superstar Katy Perry is standing by Muslims in America.

The 32-year-old singer funded and executive-produced a public service announcement (PSA), which draws parallels between Trump's plan for registering all Muslim-Americans and the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.

The video features an 89-year-old Japanese woman, Haru Kuromiya, who describes being forced out of her home as a child and into a camp under the pretence of national security.

"My entire family was put on a registry. Our constitutional rights were taken away from us," she said.

At the time, the American government ordered more than 120,000 Japanese-Americans to be placed in the Manzanar internment camp.

As the video was coming to an end, the actress playing Haru Kuromiya removes her prosthetics and reveals herself to be Pakistani-Muslim actress Hina Khan.

Perry's video comes as a plea to prevent "history repeating itself" if Trump were to go ahead with his Muslim registry.

The PSA urged everyone to "not turn against each other out of fear" and to "not normalize hate."

Aya Tanimura, who directed the video, said: "Trump has created an atmosphere of fear for Muslim Americans in the United States.

"The accountability and responsibility for what you say and do now has been lifted so people feel a little freer to be racist, or act upon racism, because there are not necessarily consequences for it — it’s just acceptable behavior.

"If laws are put in place to back that up, it will be pretty scary."

Tanimura was all praise for Perry's courage to speak out, saying: "Katy has always been a champion of the underdog, of minorities, of the people who are kind of left of centre, and she’s become more politically involved in the last few election cycles."
