'Better Call Saul' will meet more old (future) friends this season

Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) will meet some old (or future) friends in Season 3 of AMC's 'Better Call Saul,' due in April.

PASADENA, Calif. — Better Call Saul is calling on some old friends.

When the show returns for a third season April 10, we’ll see familiar faces from AMC’s Breaking Bad, the acclaimed series for which Saul is a prequel.

“It’s a show where you know where it’s headed, what the ultimate goal is,” says co-creator Vince Gilligan. “This year is no different, we’re inching the show down the field,” to see how Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill becomes the sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman, seen in Bad.

AMC revealed, in a fake commercial for Los Pollos Hermanos, the chicken fast-food chain that figured into Bad, that Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) will be among them. (It aired in Albuquerque, where the show is set and filmed).

Los Pollos Hermanos: Taste the Family

“I’m so honored to be able to come back” to playing Gus, Esposito told TV critics Saturday. He's “a little more immature than when we left off….Gus is a very cagey character,” Esposito says. “When we left him, he was a guy who wanted revenge. But he was also very caring about his family of business people.”

Who else might surface?

"I don't read ahead and I don't learn what's to come," says Odenkirk, who knows the endgame but does not want to "know the whole world" of how he gets there.

He also doesn't know where the story will stop. Right now, we're seeing Saul pre-Breaking Bad, but nothing says we won't also see more of him post-Breaking Bad. "We call it a prequel to Breaking Bad, but in many ways it's a sequel," says co-creator Peter Gould.

So you never know.

Says Gilligan: If 2016 taught us nothing else, it's that anything is possible."
