It was a statement win from the start.

UConn began its 91st win - putting the team in the history books for the longest winning streak in college basketball - by allowing only a single basket in the first quarter against SMU on Saturday. The first quarter ended with the Huskies ahead, 26-2.

While a large part of SMU's troubles stemmed from being completely over-matched by a good UConn defense, there were also a lot of apparent nerves from the Mustangs. Layups went high off the glass, there were missed free throws and thrown away passes.

Of course, SMU isn't alone in being bewildered by the score at the end of the first quarter - in UConn's 90th win, they held USF to six points in the first quarter and went out to a 30-6 lead. And, of course, no one has beaten UConn since 2014.

"I think from our standpoint it's something that's never been done before so it feels like something special. The fact that we were able to do it in the way that we do it says a lot about the kind of players we recruit year in and year out," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said of the win streak after the game. "Women's basketball is always a little bit under-the-radar and doesn't get the respect that it deserves from a lot of different sources but people that follow the game and people that enjoy the game, I think really appreciate what this program has done."

SMU shook off the nerves a bit, found their footing and put a few more points on the board, but after the opening quarter it was clear the game was never anywhere near in danger for Connecticut, which won 88-48 in Dallas.
