Deceased Shihabur Rahman Shihab, 27, was a third-year BBA student of Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB).

The body was recovered from his room at an apartment on the second floor of a house at Road 3 of the area Saturday afternoon, police said.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia, quoting Shihab's relatives, said the other members of the family went to Madaripur to visit his ailing maternal grandmother some days ago.

They returned Friday night and found his room locked from outside. They thought he was in a friend's house.

The members of the family called police when they smelt a bad odour coming out from the room.

Police from Adabor station later broke the door and found the beheaded body inside. It was sent to DMCH for post-mortem examination.

Shihab's distant nephew Abu Bakr told bdnews24.com that Shihab, son of Sirajul Islam and Shahina Sultana, was the eldest of two brothers and a sister.

Bakr said nothing was stolen from the house.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Biplab Kumar Saha told bdnews24.com: "It's a murder. Police will consider every angle to solve the mystery. The murderer will be brought to book."
