Sachiko Katsura, a Tokyo mother, says she makes it a rule to read 10 picture books a day to her son.

TOKYO -- Characters playing catch with a kitten as the ball, stories centered on a loved one's death and pictures of new mothers' breasts may raise eyebrows but they are part of a revolution.
