Panels formed to set up medical colleges at Gurugram, P’kula

The state government has formed expert committees to set up two government medical colleges in Panchkula and Gurugram. The panels will be headed by the Vice-Chancellor of the Pandit BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak.

Other members include the directors of the Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College, Nalhar, and Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College, Karnal. The medical college at Panchkula will be set up on 31.5 acres belonging to the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) in Sector 5 of Mansa Devi Complex. The second medical college will be established on 41 acres at Silokhara village of Gurugram district.

Sources said the state government had given ‘in principle’ approval to establish the medical college and hospital with initial intake of 100 MBBS students and 300-bedded hospital attached to it.

However, a provision is being made to increase the number of MBBS seats to 200, upgrade the hospital to include 500 beds along with the addition of a dental college with 100 BDS seats. The government also plans to start MD, MS, PG diplomas and MDS courses in future.

Sources said the state government plans to seek financial contributions from the Sheetla Mata Shrine Board, Municipal Corporation, HUDA and the upcoming Gurugram Development Authority. The state government has already approved the plan to upgrade the Civil Hospital at Bhiwani to a medical college with 100 seats.

The Centre and the state government would spend Rs 380 crore in 60:40 ratio to upgrade the existing district hospitals to medical colleges.
