Two killed in attack on Trinamool office

January 12, 2017 12:46 am | Updated 01:06 am IST - KOLKATA:

Unidentified persons opened fire on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in Kharagpur munici- pality on Wednesday, killing Srinu Naidu, husband of a local TMC councillor.

A. Sriniwas Rao Naidu alias Srinu Naidu, who was declared dead at a city hospital, had several criminal cases pending against him, including half-a-dozen murder charges. One of his associates Dharama Rao was also killed in the firing, while three persons were injured.

A little after 2.30 p.m., a group of men came in front of the TMC’s office in a vehicle and started firing indiscriminately, an eyewitness said. “Naidu was later seen lying on the ground on the office premises,” the eyewitness said. He was allegedly involved in smuggling of scrap iron.

He was arrested in April 2015 from the Nizam Palace in Kolkata, which houses several Central government offices. His rivalry with Basab Rambabu, also accused of being involved in iron scrap smuggling, is well-known. Kharagpur municipality has been witness to a gang war over the railway scrap business.
