KOCHI: The Edathala police arrested four persons, who were allegedly engaged in gambling, from a rented house near Maradu. During a raid on Wednesday, the cops also seized ₹37,750 from their possession.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the house was rented by one Kunjumon, who also ran the gambling ring. The other accused were identified as Mathew, Dominic, and Anilkumar, all natives of Aluva.

The accused were booked under the Kerala Gaming Act.

Meanwhile, the Ernakulam Rural Police said majority of those addicted to gambling were from the upper middle class.

The games, organised on the pretext of parties, are played with such high stakes that the total amount transacted even runs into several lakhs. ‘Pannimalathu’, an indigenous version of poker, is the commonly played game in these gambling dens.
