Criminal shot dead in Sivaganga

The victim, who has about 30 criminal cases against him, tried to attack a police party when it tried to nab him.

The Sivaganga police shot dead a hardcore criminal, who escaped after hacking a police constable on Wednesday morning. Karthigaisamy (35), who has about 30 criminal cases against him, tried to attack a police party when it tried to nab him, police said.

Police said the criminal who was part of a six member gang, hacked Velmurugan, a police constable attached to Sivaganga town police when he tried to question them during vehicle check up. On being alerted that a gang has escaped after committing robbery at a petrol station in Madurai on Tuesday night, a police team was checking vehicles when the gang sped fast without stopping the Qualis vehicle.

The constable who chased the vehicle was hacked by the gang. They escaped abandoning the vehicle, police said. After launching a hunt, a police team encountered the criminal and shot him dead.

The constable who suffered cut injuries on head was admitted to government medical college hospital, police said.
