‘Appoint women cops in civil supplies CID’

The earlier stand of the government was that women officers were not fit for the job as they would have to travel and cover the entire jurisdiction of revenue districts.

CHENNAI: The first bench of the Madras High Court has directed the State government to post women inspectors in general police service in Civil Supplies Criminal Investigation Department (CS-CID) too.

“The mental process of excluding the women officers must be eschewed and we caution the officer not to approach posting with such an intent,” the bench of Chief Justice SK Kaul and Justice M Sunder warned on Monday.

Originally, taking serious note of women police personnel not being posted in the CS-CID from newspaper reports, the bench initiated suo motu proceedings on November 21. The earlier stand of the government was that women officers were not fit for the job as they would have to travel and cover the entire jurisdiction of revenue districts.

When the matter came up on Monday, DGP K Radhakrishnan filed an affidavit and clarified that the GO dated October 19, 2005, did not refer to any debarment of women police officers from being posted in the CS-CID so long as it meets the same guidelines which are meant for either men or women police officers.
