‘This Is Us’ dives right in to resolve that Toby cliffhanger

This post contains spoilers. Obviously.

The weepy NBC drama “This Is Us” left viewers in a puddle of tears weeks ago, as it closed out a Christmas episode with the fan-favorite Toby suffering what appeared to be a major heart attack — and just after he and Kate got back together, too.

Well, within minutes of Tuesday night’s midseason premiere, we could all breathe a sigh of relief.

The show opened with Kate (Chrissy Metz) standing dazed in a chaotic emergency room. We then saw she was looking for the hospital room of Toby (Chris Sullivan).

And there he was, alert and cracking wise and hitting on Kate, per usual.

“This is what I get for flying across country to surprise you,” Toby told Kate. “You need to lock the door and climb up here,” he told her from his hospital bed.

NBC’s ‘This Is Us’ is officially the surprise breakout hit of the fall TV season

Toby said he suffered cardiac arrhythmia. (“It’s harmless,” he declared, saying that it sounds like the affliction of a white guy who can’t dance).

As the episode progressed, Toby’s condition propels him, and then Kate, to share the depth of their feelings for each other.

Toby actually has a much more serious condition that his doctor says can be permanently addressed through a surgical procedure. He resisted, and Kate got upset and left. But when she returned, she found out that he has decided to go through with the procedure, despite his debilitating fear of surgery.

“I just don’t want you to freak out,” Toby told Kate as he was being prepared to go under. “The thing is, I’m kind of in love with you. There, you happy? You got a dying man confessing his love to you.”

Yes, ‘This Is Us’ deserves to be nominated for a Golden Globe

Kate failed to respond in kind. “I didn’t want it to be this dramatic goodbye” Kate told her two siblings (the only scene in the whole episode where we see “the big three” together). But she’s worried that she may have missed her chance.

Well, no Toby cliffhangers this time.

As he rested in his hospital bed post-surgery, appearing to still be under, Kate confessed: “So, I love you too, just an FYI.”

“I’ve never said that to anyone I wasn’t related to,” she continued. “Listen, this is scary, this is all just scary, honestly. But I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Toby, if you’ll have me.”

Cue Toby opening his eyes, having heard the whole thing.

“I would totally marry you if that’s something you’re down with,” he told her. “I’d marry the hell out of you, Kate Pearson.”

“You would? Just like that?” she asked.

“It was just like that from the moment I met you, kid,” he responded. “All of this is just life trying to get in the way.”

So, there you have it. Not only did the writers not kill off Toby, but they wrote him right into the Pearson family.
