  • HOCKEY. Weatherhead men beat countrymates Wananchi 4-3 but it was just a mere consolation as they now have to fight for crumbs in the seventh-place playoff tie.

KAMPALA.

Vincent Kasasa and Lawrence Robin Okongo bagged braces as Weatherhead men beat local champions Wananchi 4-3 at the Africa Cup of Club Championship (ACCC) at City Park – Nairobi yesterday.

The win means Weatherhead are off the bottom of the men’s Pool A and if Wananchi, who have now lost three games keep true to form and fail to beat holders Eastern Company on Thursday, their Ugandan counterparts will play in the seventh place playoff on Friday.

“Tough luck today, now we have an unenviable job of looking for a win against the Egyptians and we can’t take it lightly,” Wananchi captain Derrick Akuwa, said trying to pick a positive from the game, where goals for his side came through Thomas Opio (brace) and Emmanuel Baguma.

Weatherhead, who lost 14-0 to the Egyptian side, play Kenya Police today and the playoffs will be an inspiration if they are to pull off a shocker. “Like it’s always the case in our Lugogo games, the goals came from counterattacks,” Kasasa, who doubles as coach for both Weatherhead men and ladies’ teams, said yesterday.

“It is an added positive that the win means we still have something to play for,” he added, before delving into the ladies game.

For the third time running, Weatherhead lost to women’s holders Orange Telkom, 9-0.
“They outplayed us in the first half scoring six goals but when we pulled back Siddy Alum to defence and rested Irene Blick for the second half we hustled on.”
