Mohammad Azharuddin files papers for Hyderabad Cricket body polls
Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin filed nomination papers for the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) president post. He said he is coming back to Hyderabad to revive the past glory of cricket in Hyderabad.

“At one point in time, we were second largest in India and had seven members from Hyderabad in the Indian team. But, today, we are importing players to play for Hyderabad. We need to revive the past glory,” he told media persons after filing the papers.

Election for the HCA body became imminent as the Asshad Ayub quitting the post following a Supreme Court verdict o Lodha Committee reforms.

“I played for Hyderabad for many years and now, I feel sad about the sorry state of affairs. Cricket has gone down here. I will work with all to take the sport forward,” he said.

Azhar picked up the Telangana sentiment too. “Earlier, when we played, we were regarded as players from Andhra Pradesh. Now, Telangana has become a reality after prolonged struggles. We need to protect and enhance its image,” he said twice in the media interaction. He said cricket in Hyderabad needs to be a concerted effort. “HCA cannot be run at the whims and fancies of one or some individuals. It is a concerted effort,” he said adding, “Cricket should flourish in Hyderabad again.” He also vowed to improve cricket in Telangana districts.

High Court in 2011 freed him of the match fixing charges. “I don’t want to react what people think on that issue (of 2000). But, that issue (match fixing) is closed and everything is clean and clear,” he said. It may be mentioned that Azhar was banned for life by BCCI on charge of involvement in the match fixing scandal.

Azhar as a 21-year old frail-looking boy created a sensation hitting three consecutive centuries in three tests on his debut against England in 1984-85 to set a world record.

This Hyderabad-born studied at the All Saints High School in the city and he graduated from famous Nizam College. Known as Ajju among his relatives and friends, received all encouragement and support from his grandfather Mohammed Vajihuddin, who was also a famous personality in the city.

He has a very vast friend circle in the city and a good fan following.
