The Marathi film, Pudhakar – Ek Paaul (Initiative – A Step), made by Mumbaikars Anand Gokhale and Prachi Kathale has won an award as the Best Short Film at Chennai Rainbow Film Festival.

The film debuted at the Delhi International Queer Theatre last year and the plot revolves around the theme of acceptance of LGBTQ people by their peers.

Vikrant Prasanna, chairman of the festival said, “The film was selected among 150 contributions. Of which, only 20 were Indian. A panel of seven members — film critics, bloggers and people from the community voted.”

Speaking about their triumph, Gokhale said, “We are extremely happy that our film was selected, and we are even happier because it is made in our mother tongue. We didn’t want a sad plot about the
issues plaguing the LGBTQ community. We wanted to spread the message of what society could be.”

Gokhale’s mother, Sushama who has also acted in the film, was present at the Chennai screening. “I believe that parents should support their children,” she says. “I didn’t know much about the LGBTQ community, however, I am happy that I have understood it. I wanted other parents also to understand and know more about the community. So I showed my support by acting in it.”

Kathale, a 26-year-old independent film-maker, can barely control his excitement when he says, “We did hope to win but we didn’t really expect it. People who watched the film were extremely happy. They came up to us and appreciated our work.” Kathale adds, “Our aim is to win a mention at Kashish Queer Film Festival.” Kashish is an international film festival which takes place in Mumbai.
