BAREILLY: Chancellor of
Invertis University, a private institute,
Umesh Gautam, has joined the
BJP on Monday. He had contested Lok Sabha elections with a BSP ticket in 2014 but had lost. According to some sources, Gautam is likely to get ticket to contest the forthcoming state assembly elections.
Gautam joined the saffron party on Monday during a meeting of BJP cadres in four districts - Bareilly, Badaun, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur.
BJP state general secretary Ashok Kathariya and other senior leaders were also present at the event.
Even though he managed to get nearly one lakh votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, his security deposit was forfeited.
BJP district president, Ravindra Rathore, said, “Gautam who is a Brahmin, is one of the prominent personalities of the city and his induction into the party will strengthen BJP’s prospects in the state assembly elections.”
In the last Lok Sabha elections, senior BJP leader Santosh Gangwar of BJP had received 5,18,258 votes while Ayesh Islam of
Samajwadi Party who is wife of Bhojipura MLA Shazil Islam got away with 2,77,573 votes.
