Does break with protocol signal a harder US line on China?

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's telephone call with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen surprised governments around the world and has sown confusion about his administration's strategy for the greater China region.

Based on his apparent isolationist inclinations, many believed Trump was not interested in the decades-old U.S. policy of China containment. But he shook Beijing on Dec. 2 by upending protocol and talking to Tsai as if she were the head of an internationally recognized nation.
