Over 1200 Urdu poetry lovers attended Karwan-e-Urdu Qatar's grand poetry session titled 'Jashn-e-Munawwar Rana' held at the DPS-MIS School in Al Wakrah recently.
Munawwar Rana was presented with a Life Time Achievement award and INR1,00,000 in recognition of his services towards Urdu literature and poetry.
Third secretary of the Indian embassy in Qatar, Dr Mohamed Aleem was the chief guest for the event. He along with Habib Hashmi, Azeem Abbas and KUQ President and Founder Atiq Anzar presented the award to Rana.
"This lifetime achievement award by KUQ is like an alternative of the Sahitya Akademi award for me. I always knew I will get my reward for taking a stand," Rana told the audience on receiving the award, referring to the Sahitya Akademi Award which he along with many others in India had returned.
Rana thanked the management of KUQ and members of the community in Qatar for bestowing him with the recognition.
After the awards ceremony, KUQ management also launched its magazine consisting works read by poets at the symposium.
KUQ General Secretary Shahid Khan started the proceedings with a speech on the significance of mother tongue. He welcomed all the poets on the stage and gave a brief introduction on them.
KUQ Communication Secretary Rafiuddin Umri and Joint Secretary Dr Mohamed Aslam welcomed the poets on to the stage and presented them with bouquets.
A special mention was made about Azeem Abbas's mother and Jamia Millia Islamia professor Dr Humayun Akhtar Nazmi, who had specially come from India to attend the programme.
Atiq Anzar thanked Rana for attending the event despite being unwell.
Along with Rana, many other poets including Habib Hashmi, Mansoor Usmani, Johar Kanpuri, Shakeel Azmi, Suresh Asthana, Saif Babar, Mumtaz Naseem, Naeem Faraz, Atiq Anzar, Azeez Nabeel, Maqsood Anwar Maqsood, Dr Wasi Bastavi and Rashid Alam Rashid recited their poetry.
Jashn-e-Munawwar Rana was sponsored by Salman Jewellery and Watches and Commercial Bank.
