AURANGABAD: The Jalna police on Saturday took out a women empowerment rally with an aim to make those affected speak out about harassment in any form.
Senior police officers, women activists, social workers and a number of school and college going students participated in the rally that passed through a number of areas in the town.
It was organised as a part of the on-going police raising day that is being celebrated across the state.
Cops said that the rally has gained importance in the wake the recent murder at Ambad, which is about 100 kms from here. A 34-year-old woman was shot dead by her husband’s 19-year-old cousin, following a futile rape bid, on Monday. The accused in this case used her husband’s licensed firearm for committing the act.
Jalna superintendent of police Jyoti Priya Singh told TOI, “The arrested accused confessed that he was trying to make inappropriate advances for quite sometime. Had the woman revealed his acts, the accused would have been exposed and things would have not been this bad.”
The woman officer said that as per numerous NGOs working for women welfare, a number of crime against women go unreported, especially in the rural pockets, due to various reasons including lack of knowledge and social stigma.
Speaking on the occasion, the woman officer, appealed to the girl students and women to come forward and speak about any form of physical, mental or sexual harassment that they are facing.
The Jalna police also publicised its various helpline numbers including the ones dedicated for women in distress.
