January 08, 2017 12:42 am | Updated 12:42 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Plastic and electronic waste will be collected at all government offices, schools and colleges as part of the Haritha Keralam programme.

The district will be divided into different zones, and the waste will be collected from each zone on January 25 under the aegis of Suchitwa Mission. The zones will be identified with the help of the grama panchayats, following which the public will be notified of the same.

Schools and colleges

Other activities under Haritha Keralam will be strengthened, including the planting of saplings and water conservation. These activities will be school and college-centred, with trees being planted at and rainwater harvesting being undertaken near educational institutions.

Students will be entrusted with the upkeep of these activities. As the programme has been conceived with a long-term vision, it will be arranged for future students to continue the activities.

Related activities by clubs, residents’ associations, National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadet Corps (NCC) and Student Police Cadets (SPC) will be co-ordinated, with these groups taking up cleaning drives and water conservation measures in every zone. School-level meetings are to be held for this purpose.

Evaluation

An evaluation of the activities undertaken so far will be conducted. District Collector S. Venkatesapathy has issued directions for the submission of reports on the progress of the construction of rainwater pits, and the renovation and cleaning of canals and ponds.

The Agriculture Department has been directed to submit a report on the present condition of the seeds sown at the beginning of the programme and the steps taken for the maintenance of the young plants.

Meet on January 27

All departments of the government have been instructed to participate in the mission and come up with innovative activities to realise the aim of a ‘Harithakeralam.’

A presentation on the activities undertaken so far and those planned for the future are to be made by each department at a meeting at the Collectorate Conference Hall on January 27.
