MANILA – The Letran Lady Knights finally barged into the win column of the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament following a 22-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-13 win over the Mapua Lady Cardinals on Friday at the San Juan Arena.

Mikaela Lopez led the way with 13 points, including 11 attacks and two blocks, for the Lady Knights, which snapped its six-game losing skid to improve its win-loss record to 1-6.

Glayssa Torres chipped in 11 markers for the Lady Knights, which also got 31 excellent sets, including some in the final set, from Charm Simborio to go along with her five markers.

After losing the opening frame, the Lady Knights had a strong start in the second, third and fourth canto behind Lopez and Torres as it prevented end-set runs by the Lady Cardinals.

Lady Knights head coach Mike Inoferio said the victory was a sigh of relief for them after losing their first six matches, including a couple of five setter meltdowns against the San Sebastian Lady Stags and defending champion College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers.

“At first medyo masama talaga ‘yung loob namin kasi ‘yung ilang games namin na decisive at di naman malayo ‘yung score namin, medyo mabigat,” Inoferio said. “But this is a sigh of relief for us.”

Jela Peña top-scored with 12 points, while Angelica Guardian added 11 markers for the Lady Cardinals, which suffered its seventh straight defeats in as many outings this season.

The Lady Cardinals, however, have a decent chance of scoring its breakthrough win this season as it faces fellow 0-7 win-loss cellar-dwellar Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals on Jan. 13./PN
