Kevin Pietersen slammed a superb 73 off 46 balls, while Rob Quiney cracked 51 off 30 balls to help Melbourne Stars put up a commanding total on the board. In reply, Melbourne Renegades could never recover from the regular blows they suffered and fell 46 runs short.

Batting first, Stars lost Luke Wright early in the innings but Quiney and Pietersen shared a superb 66-run stand to set the platform for a strong total. Pietersen then got together with Glenn Maxwell to add 65 runs to the board as Stars reached 141/2 in the 14th over before Maxwell was out for 24.

Renegades fought back into the game towards the end with some quick wickets, including that of a well-set Pietersen, but captain David Hussey smashed 27 off just 11 balls to lift Stars to 200 in their 20 overs.

Sunil Narine opened the batting again for the Renegades, but the move bombed after he smashed Michael Beer for a six in the first over. After the West Indian fell for 10 in the fourth over, Renegades lost their next eight wickets for just 74 runs.

Michael Beer picked up three wickets while Adam Zampa too took three scalps for 19 as Renegades slumped to a 46-run loss.

Brief scores: Melbourne Stars 200/7 in 20 overs (Kevin Pietersen 73, Rob Quiney 51; James Pattinson 3-44) beat Melbourne Renegades 154/9 in 20 overs (Cameron White 38; Michael Beer 3-32) by 46 runs
