Women workers at crematoria get bikes

January 07, 2017 01:40 am | Updated 01:40 am IST - CHENNAI:

Women staff working at the crematoriums in Velankadu on New Avadi Road and Otteri can now travel to work with ease. They were provided scooters at a function on Friday by the Indian Community Welfare Organisation (ICWO), an NGO that is maintaining crematoriums for the Chennai Corporation.

K. Gnanaprakasam, former judge, Madras High Court, handed over the keys of the scooters to the four women staff members.

The beneficiaries recalled their daily ordeal to reach the workplace during odd hours. Esther Shanthi, caretaker of Otteri crematorium, said travelling by a two-wheeler would save time and help them return home easily, especially late in the evening.

During the occasion, A.J. Hariharan, founder secretary of ICWO, said the initiative was funded by the family and friends of late Luc Bergeret from Belgium, who had raised funds for educational scholarships.

“After his death, his family donated the scooters for women employees as per his wish and also raised funds to support scholarships for nearly 180 children,” Mr. Hariharan said.
