HYDERABAD: A lawyer from Bihar, Kamlesh Kumar Singh, arrested by Crime Investigation Department (CID) officials and taken into their custody for further investigation in EAMCET leak scam, died in Osmania General Hospital.
The Afzalgunj police of Hyderabad had registered a case of custodial death under Section 176 of Criminal Procedure Code following the lawyer’s death. The CID sleuths arrested Singh in Bihar on December 20 last. After presenting him before the court there, they brought the accused to Hyderabad on prisoner’s transit warrant.
A local court here had remanded him in judicial custody. He was lodged in Chanchalguda central prison. The CID sleuths had taken him into their custody from judicial remand for further investigation on Sunday (December 31).
“He was one of the key persons behind leakage of question papers of EAMCET-II. We suspect that he secured the two sets of question papers from the printing press in Delhi in a pen drive,” police sources said. While being in the custody of CID, Singh complained of chest pain around 11.45 a.m. on Monday.
He was rushed to near-by Mahavir Hospital but following the suggestion of doctors there he was shifted to Osmania General Hospital (OGH) for treatment. On Tuesday around 4.20 p.m., he died while undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Doctors opined that he died of heart failure or myocardial infarction, the CID officials said in a statement. Following a complaint lodged by CID officials, the Afzalgunj police registered a case of custodial death.
After performing autopsy, the body was handed over to the relatives of the lawyer. Singh’s death could hamper investigation into the sensational case of EAMCET scam as investigators believed that he carried crucial information about the kingpins behind the scam.
“Only Singh would have told us as to how he knew about the printing press in Delhi where the question papers were printed,” a police officer associated with the investigation of the case said.
