Promotion-chasing Derby have signed midfielder Julien De Sart from Middlesbrough on loan.

The 22-year-old has moved to Pride Park in a deal until the end of the current campaign.

De Sart has also been given permission to feature in the FA Cup and could make his County debut in Saturday's third-round tie at West Brom.

The Belgian U21 international is a defensive midfielder and will add to the options available to Rams boss Steve McClaren in the middle of the park.

He played twice for Boro in the Championship as they secured promotion to the top-flight in May, but has been limited to just one game this season, a League Cup defeat at Fulham.

McClaren said: "We're pleased to welcome Julien to Derby County.

"He is a talented player with plenty of potential and, having made the move from Belgium, he has been in English football for almost a year now. I'm looking forward to working with him."

De Sart came through the youth ranks in his homeland at Standard Liege and made 75 appearances, which included Europa League experience.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tomas Mejias has joined Spanish side Rayo Vallecano on a six-month loan deal.

Mejias, who came through the ranks at Real Madrid, was part of the Boro side which knocked Manchester United out of the League Cup last season when he save shoot-out penalties from Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young.
