Cancer unit at Royal Glamorgan Hospital planned

Plans for a £6.75m specialist cancer care unit at Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Rhondda Cynon Taff have been unveiled.

Palliative care for cancer patients in the county is currently provided at Y Bwthyn in Pontypridd Cottage Hospital.

The new unit would mean patients avoiding having to travel between units to access treatment.

Dr Ian Back, a consultant in palliative medicine, said palliative care included dealing with patients' emotional needs as well as providing treatment.

He said the plans by Cwm Taf Health Board and Macmillan Cancer Support meant the "best of both worlds" could be offered to patients.
