Hendrix's longest-owned guitar, an Epiphone acoustic that he bought second hand for around $25, sold for a premium-inclusive £209,000.
The guitar was estimated at £80,000-120,000 and had been owned by Hendrix for three years. He gave the instrument to Blue Mink guitarist Alan Parker, and it featured in recordings by Dusty Springfield, Walker Brothers, Paul McCartney and David Bowie.
The price was not as high as the reported $2m that Hendrix's 1968 Stratocaster sold at auction in 2005, bought by businessman Paul Allen of Microsoft.
Cloud Guitar
The Bonhams auction also included Prince's Cloud Guitar, which he took on tour in 1993. It sold at a premium-inclusive £87,500 after carrying an estimate of £25,000-30,000.
Bonhams’ Entertainment department head Katherine Schofield said: "There was determined bidding from global collectors throughout the sale which showed the strength of the market for this category."
The auction included sketches, clothes and albums. A watercolour and pencil sketch of Audrey Hepburn in her role as Holly Golightly in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's, sold for a premium inclusive £35,000.
A record was set for an item of clothing worn by a member of the Rolling Stones when a silk jacket worn by Stones' Keith Richards on stage at the London Palladium in January 1967, sold at a premium inclusive £35,000.
The buyer’s premium at Bonhams was 25%/20%/12%.
