Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) has been granted permission by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to start soil remediation on a trial basis at Kodaikanal, the company said.
HUL has been asked by the TNPCB to undertake the trial for three months as per the detailed project report at its erstwhile factory premises.
The company has been asked to treat soil “to the maximum extent to reduce mercury level not restricting to a level of 20mg/kg”. The trial which will begin after preparatory work is undertaken and statutory approvals are processed simultaneously, will be monitored by the Scientific Experts Committee, constituted by the Supreme Court Monitoring committee, TNPCB and Central Pollution Control Board, the company said in a press release.
“On getting the results, SEC will then decide on fixing of Site Specific Target Level (SSTL) and relevant monitoring process,” HUL said.
