Akshay Kumar's Jolly LLB 2, Rajinikanth's 2.0, Salman Khan's Tiger Zinda Hai - 10 hotly anticipated sequels of 2017

Sequels or reboots seem to be Bollywood's go to formula of having a greater chance at making a successful film. The main reason if that the first movie has already been loved by the audience, the characters and the setting are already established for the viewers, and the makers would want to capitalise on that. Hollywood has been going on the sequel bandwagon for long, with they now improving on the idea by creating franchises (The Fast & The Furious) and shared universe (Marvel Cinematic Universe, DCEU). Even Bollywood has caught on this bug on a large scale, though the idea of having a shared universe will not happen any time soon. But sequels and franchises do happen and some of them work big time (like the Dabanng and Housefull franchise). It's not that Bollywood never made sequels before, but it's only in the recent years, have we seen so many sequels releasing in a year. However making a sequel is not a sureshot answer for a hit. In 2016 itself, there were more than 10 sequels and yet only Housefull 3 managed to make some money. The rest of the movies like Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3, Great Grand Masti, Rock On 2, Ghayal Once Again, Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive, Jai Gangaajal failed to make a mark, despite some of them having huge stars in the cast like Priyanka Chopra, Shraddha Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar and Sunny Deol. However the sequel mania is not gonna get down anytime soon, with 2017 also seeing some very interesting part 2 and 3's and a spinoff as well, with Akshay Kumar leading the march. Jolly LLB 2

Jolly LLB 2, or The State vs Jolly LLB, has Akshay Kumar take on the role of the small town lawyer played memorably by Arshad Warsi in the original. Annu Kapoor will be playing opposing lawyer, while Huma Qureshi is the female lead. Sourabh Shukla, who won the National award for his role of a honest judge in the original, will also be seen in the sequel in the same capacity. The sequel will be again directed by Subhash Kapoor.

Commando 2

Vidyut Jamwal tasted surprise success in the original Commando, so it's natural that the movie will have a sequel. Interestingly the sequel will be directed by Deven Bhojani, the actor who played Aamir Khan's bestie in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, while also being the director of popular TV series Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Sumit Sambhal Lega. Adah Sharma is the heroine.

Naam Shabana

Neeraj Pandey's critically acclaimed thriller, Baby, will have a spinoff that is based around the character of Taapsee Pannu. Directed by Shivam Nair, Naam Shabana also has Akshay Kumar in an extended cameo, reprising his role of Ajay Singh Rajput from the original. Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran will also be having an important role in the movie.

Sarkar 3

The Sarkar is back! Ram Gopal Varma goes for another dab at luck for regaining his lost glory in Bollywood by making this threequel to Amitabh Bachchan's Godfather-inspired character. Though Abhishek Bachchan, whose character dies in the sequel, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan won't return for the movie, there are some interesting new entrants to the franchise like Amit Sadh, Yami Gautam, Jackie Shroff, Ronit Roy and Manoj Bajpayee.

Baahubali 2

We have still whether this or a certain Rajinikanth movie is going to be the biggest movie of 2017, but let's talk about this SS Rajamouli movie first. Supposed to release in 2016, Baahubali will finally get the concluding part in this year, as all the main players, like Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah Bhatia, Anushka Shetty and Sathyaraj will be returning for the sequel. And we will finally know why Kattappa killed Baahubali.

Judwaa 2

David Dhawan returns to reboot one of his most popular movies, Judwaa, with his younger son Varun Dhawan doing the double take. Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu will play the female leads, and we would not count out on a cameo by Salman Khan in there as well.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Though not technically a sequel, Badrinath Ki Dulhania will continue on the footsteps of Karan Johar-produced Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and director Shashank Khaitan reunite for what is purported to be a fun romcom. Former Bigg Boss contestant Gauhar Khan also has an integral role to play in the movie.

Aankhen 2

The original Aankhen ended on a cliffhanger, with the surviving two blind bank robbers, played by Akshay Kumar and Arjun Rampal, try to escape with the loot, but the mastermind behind the heist, played by Amitabh Bachchan, catches up with them. We don't know if the sequel will continue on the same track, as only Amitabh Bachchan and Arjun Rampal will return for the sequel, while Anil Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and Regina Cassandra are the new players this time. Anees Bazmee will direct the sequel.

2.0

Rajinikanth reprises his dual roles of Chitti the android and Vaseegaran, his meek scientist creator in what is perceived to be India's costliest movie ever made. The crew, including director Shankar, has promised us that the movie will have special effects on par with any good Hollywood blockbuster, and we have no reason not to believe them. However what intrigues us the most about 2.0 is that Akshay Kumar is playing a supervillain in the movie, and his getup is quite interesting.

Golmaal Again

Since Kyaa Kool Hai Hum and Masti franchises took a beating with the failures of their third installments, Golmaal series can be considered as the most successful Bollywood comedy franchise ever made. Now Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn join hands to make a fourth movie for the franchise, that has 'winner' written all over it. Arshad Warsi and Tusshar Kapoor will return as well, while Parineeti Chopra will replace Kareena Kapoor Khan as the heroine of the potential Diwali blockbuster.

Tiger Zinda Hai

It's happening! Salman Khan will reprise his popular role of the RAW (okay, former) agent Tiger in this sequel to his 2012 blockbuster, Ek Tha Tiger. And he is not alone in returning, as Katrina Kaif will be the female lead here as well. Sultan director Ali Abbas Zafar will direct the sequel that promises to be on par with international actioners like the Bourne franchise.
