The city of Huelva in southwest Spain is the new Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2017 and aims to capitalize on the position with an "original, varied and creative variety of activities".

Huelva, picks up the torch of Toledo, the 2016 gastronomy capital and Caceres, which held the honor in 2015, and will use the year to showcase its best produce, such as the fresh fruit grown in the region, the magnificent cured ham and fresh white wines.

"We have full confidence in the success of Huelva 2017. The city and the province are going to give us a year filled with gastronomic experiences which will serve to raise the profile of our cooking and its quality produce," said Mariano Palacin, president of the Spanish capital of gastronomy for 2017 at the official launch of the year on Tuesday.

Palacin said that the "program of activities is original, popular, varied and very creating and links our gastronomy with the events and popular celebrations which are held in the city."

"Everyone knows the opportunity it brings us and have accepted the challenge," said the president.

He explained that the Capital of Gastronomy organization was working closely with Huelva's restaurants and hotels in order to "create an offer which is unique and different and which will be rewarded with the support of the public." Endit
