GRP busts ‘gold biscuit’ gang at Badlapur

The Government Railway Police (GRP) has busted a racket carried out by a gang of five men who targeted only woman commuters at railway stations and stole their gold jewellery by luring them of fake gold.

On Monday, one member of the gang, Babu Kanai Debnath (36), was arrested and the cops recovered 40 grams of gold worth a lakh. “We expect a recovery of gold worth Rs 10 lakh from the rest of the gang members,” said police sources.

According to the police, the gang operated only in Shahad and Badlapur stations. The gang only targeted midlle-aged women commuters wearing gold ornaments.

“One of the members would drop fake gold biscuits in front of the target in a manner that the woman would notice it. Following this, he would strike a conversation with the woman trying to gain confidence by suggesting the woman to drop the biscuit at the nearby police station,” said sources. The man would convince his target to brush aside the hassle of police station and exchange the biscuitwith some of her own gold jewellery to which many fell prey.

On August 29, one certain Suman Jadhav (58), registered a complaint after she cheated off her gold earrings and rings worth Rs 16,000 Shahad railway station while on July 8, another woman, Madhu Sonavne (65), was cheated off her gold necklace worth Rs 40,000 in Badlapur station.

The local crime branch of Bandra Unit became suspicious of such a racket after receiving such similar complaints. They not only traced the CCTV camera footage in these two stations but also tapped all the calls made inside the two stations. This way, they traced the phone numbers of the gang members who called each other while being present inside the same station. On December 31, the cops were tipped off that Debnath was partying after which they arrested him.
