2 new police districts become functional

: The two new police districts, Rohini and Shahdara, became functional on Sunday, over two months after former Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung approved their creation.

The Shahdara district gets Vivek Vihar, Anand Vihar, Gandhi Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Farsh Bazar, Seemapuri, Geeta Colony, Shahdara, Mansarovar Park and GTB Enclave under its jurisdiction.

These areas were earlier with the east and north-east police districts.

The Rohini district has areas including Aman Vihar, Najafgarh, Mundka, Paschim Vihar, Sultanpuri, Mangolpuri, Kanjhawala, Minawali Nagar, Nihal Vihar, Nangloi, Ranhola and Baba Haridas Nagar under it.

These police stations were earlier under the west, south-west and outer districts.

Better grievance redressal

With Delhi’s population jumping to 1.84 crore in 2015 from 1.5 crore in 2003, the need for increasing the number of police districts was being seen as a necessity.

Previously, there were 11 police districts, some of them registering as many as 18,000 cases annually.

The large number of cases adversely affected the disposal rate of such cases, leading to dissatisfaction among complainants.

The expansion of residential pockets in the city was another factor that prompted the need for more administrative centres.

A proposal to this effect was made in August last year, and approved by Mr. Jung in October.

The Deputy Commissioners of Police for the two districts, Nupur Prasad for Shahdara and M.N. Tiwari for Rohini, were allotted in early December.

7 more sub-divisions

The Delhi Police have also created seven more police sub-divisions in the form of Maya Puri, Chhawla, Mundka, Paschim Vihar, Nand Nagri, Mayur Vihar and Barakhamba Road. Two existing sub-divisions, Prashant Vihar and Vikaspuri, were also closed, keeping in mind the police stations and their populations in mind.

The number of sub-divisions in the city now stands at 45.

Power boost

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday had announced that he had approved the addition of 15,000 police personnel and had urged the Finance Ministry to sanction it.

That would take the city police’s strength to about one lakh.
