She is survived by step-son Perry Valassis Jr. of San Jose, California; step-daughters Cheryl (Jack) Pulley of Shaker Heights, Ohio; Dodi Jackson of Brighton, Michigan; Dani Valassis of Howell, Michigan; Lori (Cullen) Proctor of Pontiac, Michigan; brother Daniel (Irene) Golec of Littleton, Colorado; and sister Celeste (Robert) Borosky of Kamuela, Hawai‘i.

Private services will be held.

Peter Charles Naftzger, 50, of Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, was born in Mt. View, California on Nov. 11, 1966 and passed away at home on Dec. 26, 2016.

He is survived by partner Laura Stubbs; parents Richard and Madeline Naftzger of San Jose, California; son Jeremy Naftzger of San Rafael, California; daughter Abigail Naftzger of San Rafael, California; brother Kenneth (Sally) Naftzger of Austin, Texas; and sister Lisa (John) New of Santa Cruz, California.

Shirley Ululanilanakila Gouveia, 70, of Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, was born in Kohala on Nov. 17, 1946, and passed away at home on Dec. 19, 2016.

She is survived by son Thomas (Tamara) Gouveia of Kailua-Kona; daughters Laurie (Stanley) Gomes of Kailua-Kona; Remie (Lars) Ige of Kailua-Kona; brother Thomas (Theresa) Chesebro Jr. of Mililani; sisters Dolly (Paul) Antonio of Kohala; Joan (Brad) Ballesteros of Kailua-Kona; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 with visitation beginning at 8:30 and services at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Kailua-Kona.

Burial to follow at Saints Family Cemetery, Captain Cook.

Tammy Kamalani Clara Cho, 53, of Captain Cook, Hawai‘i, was born in Kealakekua, Hawai‘i on July 27, 1963, and passed away on Dec. 10, 2016. Tammy was a home maker, strong willed and open hearted. She was loved by many and will be missed dearly, but will never be forgotten.

She is survived by spouse Warren Cho Sr.; son Warren Cho Jr. of South Kona; daughter Tresa (Brandon) Akao of Riverton, Wyoming; mother Harriette Wentworth of Tacoma, Washington; brothers Moses Wentworth III of Kailua-Kona; John Wentworth of Kailua-Kona; Thomas (Adriana) Pua of Napo’opo’o; sisters Leimomi Nastor of Kailua-Kona; Decemberine Mukini of South Kona; Kanani (Jesse) Minamishin of Captain Cook; three grandchildren; hanai son Andy Rodriguez of Captain Cook; hanai daughter Elvainney L. (Alfrieda M.) Pascubillo-Kanaele of Kamuela; eight God Children; brother in-law Angus Chong Jr. of Kailua-Kona; hanai sister Junal (Kalehua) Perry of Kailua-Kona; hanai brother Don (Laurie) Elsas of Arizona.

Memorial services will be held Jan. 7, 2017 at OTEC- Beach Park on Makako Bay Dr., Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, with Visitation at 9 to 10:30 a.m., Service at 10:30 am, and food and fellowship to follow.

Harriet Kehaulani Rita Kaili Malapit, 67, of Kula, Maui, passed away at her home in Kula on Dec. 27, 2016, surrounded by her hanai family, Mattie Kaeo, Kulani, Pono, Kapio, No’i, Tupu, Waipa “Bozo”, Tessie, Kalae and Manoha Kaeo. She was born on Aug. 17, 1949, in Waimea, Kaua‘i.

A potluck and scattering of her ashes will be held at Maliko Gulch Park to join her husband, Willie Malapit, on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, from noon to sunset.

She is survived by loving sister, Dora Lima Daley of Provo, Utah; brother, Harrom H. Kaili, of Anahola, Kaua‘i; daughter, Rose-Ann; 6 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews, Allison, Kimo, Denise, Malanie, Doranna, Karley Joe, Kaina and Keoki.

Rita Cabral Leval, 87 of Wailuku, passed away on Dec. 22, 2016 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. She was born on April 17, 1929 in Pu‘unēnē, Maui.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku. Mass will begin at 11 a.m. and burial will follow at 1 p.m. at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao.

Rita is survived by her sons, Lester, Robert, and Clifford Leval; daughters, Jeanette Leval, Annette (Gary) Perreira, and Lisa Leval; sisters, Helen Cordeiro, and Theresa Nunes; 18 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Leval; son, Gerald Leval; and grandson, Kenneth Perreira.

Regino Cabacungan, 86, of Wailuku, Maui, passed away on Dec. 19, 2016, at his home, under the care of his family. He was born on Sept. 7, 1930, in Wailuku, Maui.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at St. Anthony of Padua; mass will begin at 11 a.m.; burial will follow, 1 p.m. at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao.

Regino was a retired boiler room worker at Wailuku Sugar Company. He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine Cabacungan. He is survived by his sons, Lyle Cabacungan, Ivan (Cathy) Cabacungan; daughters, Kathy (Ricky) Alves, Joni (Michele) Cabacunga, Holly (Adriane) Cabacungan; sisters, Dominga Yadao, Sister Miriam Cabacungan, Martina Aguinaldo; and grandchildren, Jared, Pua, Skyler, Rosie-Lani, Chloe, Risa-Lee, Daulton, Ruby-Lou, Chad and Tyson.

Stephen Roy Funes, 60, of Kahului, passed away on Dec. 17, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family and close friends. He was born on Feb. 18, 1956 in Pu‘unēnē, Maui.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku; mass will begin at 11 a.m., and burial will follow at Maui Memorial Park at 12:30 p.m.

Stephen was the owner of S. Funes Trucking.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy (Funai) Funes; son, Rowan Funes; daughter, Rae Ann Purdy; 3 step-daughters, Natia Manaois, Maizie Manaois, and Robin (Ronald) Min; parents, Marvin (Ethel) Funes, and Ethel Tanaka; brothers, Alan Funes, Guy (Cindi) Funes; sister, Stephanie (Jose) Madera Torres; 4 step-brothers, Galen Carvalho, Norman Tanaka, Kurt Tanaka, James Tanaka; and 10 grandchildren.

Mary Lou Pennington

Mary Lou Pennington
November 22, 1935 – December 16, 2016

Mary Lou Pennington passed away peacefully at her family’s home and under the care of Hospice Maui on Dec. 16, 2016.

Mary Lou was known to many on Maui as their hard working, and meticulous attention to detail, house cleaner. Her many clients became her dear friends, and added much more to their lives than keeping their homes clean.

To her children, Michael Pennington, Athena Hewitt (aka Tina) and Jon Pennington, along with their respective spouse’s, Angela, Kevin and Marcy, she was the stalwart example of what it means to be a kind and considerate human being. To the very end she exemplified strength, endurance and acceptance of the very difficult condition she was faced with.

Mary Lou leaves behind her to sisters, Nancy Rushing of Ventura, California, and Shirley Westcott of Grand Junction, Colorado and their children. On Maui she leaves behind her grandsons, Christopher Cody, Graham and John Pennington. We love you, Oma!

The family would like to recognize Hospice Maui for all their kindness, compassion and willingness to appear at a moment’s notice, when her family needed them most. Their love and support went far beyond the call of duty.

We will miss you immensely mom and Oma.
