AHMEDABAD: Post-election victory celebrations in Ahmedabad district kept police on their toes as two incidents of breaching of law and order were reported from Thursday night to Friday afternoon in Viramgam and Sanand. Viramgam rural police have registered a case of rioting.
According to district police officials, a scuffle took place between supporters of the winner and loser of a seat at Jakhwada village late on Thursday night.
The groups confronted each other during a procession and engaged in fisticuffs. After receiving message of the crowds gathering in the village, teams of Ahmedabad rural police reached at the spot and dispersed the crowd. Police registered a complaint for rioting against 14 persons.
In another incident, an altercation was reported at Khoraj near Sanand where groups engaged in heated arguments. However, before any flare-up, police dispersed the crowds. No complaint was filed in the incident, said Sanand police officials.
The district also reported a stone-pelting incident at Liya village near Viramgam late on Friday evening. A group pelted stones on a locality and fled from the spot after which a complaint was filed in the incident for rioting and assault against 14 persons.
“The incident had taken place over a police compliant for cheating in a land deal where a few locals were named as accused. Out of 14 persons named, we have nabbed six and search for others is on. One person had sustained head injury in the incident, after which he was hospitalized. Police have been deployed at the spot,” said a senior Ahmedabad rural police official.
