NASHIK: A rare external fixation surgery was successfully performed on the broken jaw of a six-day old female calf from Buldhana at the veterinary polyclinic in Nashik. This is the first such surgery to be performed in Jalgaon district.
The jaw broke while the calf was being delivered at Motada village in Buldhana some days back.
When it was taken to the local government polyclinic, the veterinary practitioner advised surgery. But, the owner was not ready for the surgery.
The government veterinary doctor spoke to his counterpart Sanjay Gaikwad in Nashik and the latter agreed to operate on the calf for free. It was operated on Monday at Nashik. “The owner, a farmer, was not in a position to spend money for the surgery, but wanted to treat the calf. They brought the calf in a sack on two-wheeler from Buldhana, which is at a distance of about two hours,” said Gaikwad who had the assistance of animal activists. “When a calf is being delivered, it is generally pulled out. It must have been done by some locals and in the process the jaw got injured.”
The surgery went on for two hours, after which the calf was discharged and taken back to its village. “I performed the rare surgery on the calf. It is the first incident in Jalgaon district and the second surgery I did in the state. The first one was in Pune,” Gaikwad said.
