CM suspends cop for ‘abusing’ mayor
Ranchi: A traffic constable was suspended for allegedly misbehaving with mayor Asha Lakra on Tuesday.
The incident took place when the mayor was heading to a skill development programme organised by higher technical education and skill development department in the morning. A verbal spat broke out between the mayor’s driver and constable Sanjeev Kumar at New Market Chowk.
“While we were at the centre of New Market Chowk, one constable asked us to stop while the other asked us to move forward.
The situation was such that had we stopped our vehicle, we would have disrupted the traffic, hence, we tried to move ahead. Meanwhile, a third constable Sanjeev Kumar came towards us and began using abusive languages,” the mayor alleged.
“The third constable started shouting and asked us to move since the DGP’s car was reportedly arriving,” the mayor added.
Incidentally, it was during this time that chief minister Raghubar Das, who was on his way to the same programme, was passing by. Taking note of the commotion, Das stopped to find out what the problem was. The CM then directed the traffic SP to take action against the constable.
Traffic SP Sanjay Ranjan Singh said, “The CM has asked us to set up an enquiry into the matter. The constable has been suspended for now.”
Singh added, “If you are not courteous, you cannot enforce law. This should be a lesson to all constables, they need to be well-behaved to enforce law.”
However, refuting the allegations, the third constable claimed that the mayor’s car moved forward despite being asked not to. “I just said hosh mein nahi ho kya (Are you not in your senses),” Sanjeev Kumar said.
