Bholath (Kapurthala): A meeting of local Congress leaders, including ticket aspirants from Bholath constituency, on Sunday night in Nadala to oppose the ticket given to “outsider” Gurbinder Singh Atwal turned violent. The clash between party workers started in the presence of
Punjab Congress vice-president Rana Gurjit Singh who had gone there to bring the dissenting voices onboard.
The meeting was being held at house of a party leader from Nadala.
The matter reached the police on Monday morning and Kapurthala SSP entrusted an inquiry to Bholath DSP. Party sources said that the meeting was called at the residence of Punjab Congress secretary
Avtar Singh Walia to oppose the candidature of Atwal on the ground that even as there were six local aspirants, the ticket was given to an outsider. Interestingly, Atwal had sought ticket from Nakodar constituency.
During the event, an argument started between
Kulwinder Singh Babbal and Daljit Singh, both ticket aspirants. Soon the heated exchange turned violent and even chairs were used to attack each other. In the melee Babbal’s turban got knocked off.
Rana said that he had gone there to pacify the dissenting leaders so that party candidate Atwal would not face much problems. On Monday evening, Babbal submitted a complaint to Kapurthala SSP Rajinder Singh seeking action against Daljit. SSP told TOI that he had marked an inquiry to Bholath DSP to look into the matter.
